Mahiyangana, a Pali word which means flatland (Bimtenna in native dialect), is nestled beneath the steep eastern falls of the central hills. The name so aptly reflects the wide open spaces of land which features Savannah like grasslands nestled against a backdrop of breathtaking natural wonders, rich culture and a laudable history that enhances the beauty and value of the destination; Mahinyagana.

The historical chronicles of Ceylon (as once Sri Lanka was known) the Mahawamsa reveals the historical significance of Mahiyangana. Legend says, that Gautama Buddha visited Mahiyanganaya on the full moon day (Poya) of January to preach the doctrine to the pre-historic inhabitants belonging to the tribes of Yaksha, Naga and Deva, having foreseen that the island of Sri Lanka was destined to flourish and be a stronghold of Buddhism for 5000 years to come.

The River Runs Through It

Mahiyanganaya is a town situated close to the Mahaweli River in the Badulla District in the Uva Province of Sri Lanka. The island’s longest river the Mahaweli flows through the vivid and varied natural beauty of Mahiyangana given birth to by the north east monsoon of the island, replenishing and nourishing the plant, animal and human life of this resplendent land. The life giving waters support the agricultural economy of the region.

The Road to Mahiyangana

The road to Mahiyangana, 194 km from the capital city of Colombo bypassing the historical city of Kandy is widely referred to as “The road that needs both hands on the wheel all the time”, Known in the native language as the Daha Ata Vanguwa due to its 18 arduous hairpin bends. In the year 2011, the winding, descending road from Kandy was widened, re-laid and made safer with the number of hairpin bends reduced from 18 to 16.

Once the dizzying bends are navigated one arrives at the village of the bottom of the hill, namely, Hasalaka. A short drive of 7km further east one arrives at the destination; Mahiyangana. The journey through the fascinating landscape builds up a dramatic exit from the Central Highlands of the wet zone to the mid dry-zone and the vast plains of the East.
